Finding Strength, Support, and Growth Through the EmpowHER Dream Award

Pauline, the 2024 EmpowHER Dream Award recipient, shares how Soroptimist support helped her overcome challenges and grow.

What inspired you to apply for the EmpowHER Dream Award (EHDA)? What were you hoping to achieve?

I was inspired to apply after learning more about Soroptimist International and the meaningful impact the organization has on women and girls. Having attended several Soroptimist events in the past, I was already familiar with the organization’s mission and values. The EmpowHER Dream Award felt like a good opportunity to be part of that work while receiving support to continue pursuing my educational goals.

How did receiving the EmpowHER Dream Award affect your journey—educationally, career-wise, or personally?

Receiving the award made me feel truly heard and seen. Meeting other women, listening to their stories, and forming genuine connections was incredibly meaningful. Being acknowledged for my efforts and knowing that I had the support of others gave me a renewed sense of confidence and motivation. It reminded me that I’m not alone on this journey.

You shared during your awards ceremony presentation that you faced some serious challenges. What helped keep you going during the more difficult times?

My support system played a huge role. Being able to reach out and ask for help when I needed it was essential. I also benefited greatly from the resources available through my school and health services. At one point, I needed counselling to get through an especially stressful period, and I’m proud that I accessed those services. Having that support made all the difference.

Where are you now in your educational journey, and how has your life changed along the way?

I am currently in my third year of a Recreation Therapy program, and I’ve grown a lot since I first began. I was much more reserved and shy at the start, but my classes are filled with people who are deeply empathetic and passionate about helping others. This creates a safe and supportive environment where growth is encouraged. Even when learning feels uncomfortable, I can clearly see my progress and personal development. I’m embracing these changes and truly love my education program.
