The Violet Richardson Award
Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you are a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then you may be eligible to win a Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award.
Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award
Soroptimist is concerned with the special challenges facing today’s girls and young women. The organization launched the Violet Richardson Award program in 2000 as a way to recognize girls who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place. The program honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 whose volunteer efforts include: helping other disadvantaged girls; fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence, mentoring young girls and working to end discrimination and poverty.
The program is named after Violet Richardson Ward, the first president of the first Soroptimist club. Richardson Ward was committed to creating opportunities for girls and young women through her affiliations with Soroptimist, the Girl Scout Council and the American Association of University Women. Her passion for volunteer service, particularly as it affected women and girls, has been an inspiration to Soroptimists throughout the years.
Program Structure
The program begins at the Soroptimist club level where the recipients become eligible for cash award, with a matching cash award for the charitable organization of the recipient’s choosing.
The club winner then becomes eligible for additional financial awards at other levels of the organization with matching awards for their charity of choice. One winner is chosen to receive a finalist award, which includes a contribution of $2,500 to the recipient’s volunteer organization.
